During the Dom era, The Wheel of Fortune bar was our clubhouse. However, all good things must come to an end. At Jack's retirement party, we were out in full force. Someone got the bright idea that we should all pitch in and buy the Wheel. I don't remember who all was involved but I'm thinking the Christophersons, Grigalunases, Strenlaus, Ennenbachs, and Smigels for sure. Thankfully, Al Stremlau the banker sobered up enough to talk us out of it. But not before someone started a challenge of hanging an undergarment on the wheel that was proudly displayed behind the bar. There was a steady steam of people going into the john and coming out with something to hang on the wheel. It wasn't a pretty sight, but a good time was had by all.
The funniest part was the following weekend when Jon and Scot did their annual stint as emcees for the Jerry Lewis Telethon. They showed up with a brown paper grocery sack, threatening to display the contents that had been removed from the Wheel that week. I seem to remember them breaking the record for the amount of money raised that year. I recall a rather large donation by Joe Ennenbach, in particular and the Christophersons as well!
I really miss having a clubhouse, even though I'm too old to go out after rehearsals anymore. I don't miss the cockroaches, though. Jack's tacos and grasshoppers were to die for!
